Brief Description:
Counselors are charged with the professional responsibility of
enhancing the dignity and well-being of each individual who they serve. To do so,
counselors must have adequate training and experience to intentionally serve clients
who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Working with diverse communities requires
ongoing education in order to adequately be equipped to provide a safe and supportive
environment for clients and understand the ever-evolving landscape. Amily McCool will
present a basic overview of key concepts relating to working with members of the
LGBTQ+ population. The focus will be on understanding specific terms, including
pronouns and other key vocabulary, and how a counselor’s duty to be moral and respectful to their clients, colleagues and community necessitate thought and care in respecting the
identity of those individuals. She will also discuss relevant legal landscape here in North
Carolina and resources available for LGBTQ+ clients. Attendees will leave with best
practice tips and recommendations on how to provide affirming services.
Learning Objectives:
LGBTQ+ population

pronouns
